Madeline Janovec

Madeline Meza Janovec, owner of Janovec Studio/Gallery, passed away Friday, March 4th, three months after being diagnosed with Stage IV Burkitt's Lymphoma. She was a printmaker, jewelry maker, and painter; and she taught art at Clark College and Portland Community College for more than 20 years. She was my dear friend and colleague, and she will be deeply missed.

For more information about Madeline, there is a recent article on the First Friday Guide blog. firstfridayguide.com/janovec-gallery.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Madeline Janovec's death on March 4th. But I know that Madeline would like that it was Women's History Month, as she was such an advocate for women artists and women's rights. We met in the late '60's during the height of the Women's Movement, while neighbors in Lair-Hill. 20 yrs later in the late 80's we reconnected and started a women artist network called S.W.A.N. (Serious Women's Artist Network). I introduced Madeline to the Women's Caucus for Art and she immediately knew she had found her calling. We co-founded the Oregon Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art in approx 1987/88 and soon thereafter Madeline rented a studio in the building where I had my studio. As often happens several years later when I moved out of the studio and retired from PSU, we lost touch. But, I was able to follow her career through mailings and newspaper articles about her wonderful exchange program with Korea, and the birth of her gallery that became a fixture in the Portland gallery scene. Madeline made her dreams come true and affected many people. A few years back I ran into Madeline at the Jupiter Hotel Art Event and again in 2009 at Providence Pool Therapy. She seemed so healthy then, so it's very shocking that it happened so fast. Again, I sadly share in mourning this tragic loss with her family, friends, fellow artists, and her many students. m<
